Where are the largest proven reserves of oil?

The Middle East

The main idea here is understanding what “proven reserves” mean and where the largest quantities are located under current technology and economics. Proven reserves are the volumes of oil that geologists and engineers are reasonably sure can be recovered with existing methods and prices.

The Middle East holds the largest proven oil reserves because it contains several giant, easily extractable oil fields formed in favorable sedimentary basins. This combination of massive field sizes and favorable geology means a large portion of the oil there is considered recoverable with today’s technology and prices, leading to a very high overall volume of proven reserves.

North America has substantial reserves as well, including heavy oil and oil sands, but those sources often require more energy and investment to extract, which lowers their proven-reserve count relative to the Middle East. Europe has comparatively small oil reserves, and South America has significant fields too, but not at the scale of the Middle East in terms of proven recoverable oil under current conditions.
